The Five Senses: Sight

History

A painting of a woman and winged boy in a large room filled with paintings, statues, and other assorted objects, almost identical to the painting in the exhibition. This is the original, painted by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens.

Sight, Jan Brueghel I & Peter Paul Rubens, 1617, Oil on panel, 25.47 x 43.11 in., Prado Museum, Madrid

Seventeenth century artist Jan Brueghel the Younger followed two generations of painters in his family. Here he diligently replicated an original painting by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder who collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens. In the original, Rubens painted the figures while Brueghel the Elder painted the rest of the scene.
